Iām weirdly lucky that my autistic kiddo never figured out commercialism and has always had extremely reasonable (well, often weirdly specific and difficult to source, but never financially out-of-reach) Christmas and birthday wishes. Except that one year when he wanted a 5000$ military drone when I was like yeah no, Santa is magic but not THAT magic, little buddy.
I am not a Christian & donāt celebrate but being Indigenous in a place whereās itās forced upon us is heartbreaking to me. Maybe itās because Iām getting older. But I canāt stand how everyone tells me, āoh itās for the kidsā¦but for the kidsā. My kids need my support and unconditional love thatās it.
Very good. The western commercialism of this Christian holiday (like all the others) is a perversion, nothing more now. We should all remember what the season is about. Coming together as friends and family to celebrate the return of the sun at the solstice and take care of each other as the wheel of the year turns once again.
Maybe thatās the balkan root deep down, but it seems that I will be keeping my christmas thoughts as a draft. This year you stole it away. With more skill than I have now, so it will do. Anyway, you are right. This year the ultimate gift for us should be presence of others at the table. And a sweater for the dog, maybe.
Balkan trauma high five! šļø:)

Perhaps your disgust with the modern world partially has its basis in trauma related to childhood and family š¤
